When I started working on this site, I really never imagined that I’d dedicate much time to playing indie games on Windows Phone simply because of the lack of achievements. Let me tell you that this game has almost single-handedly proved me wrong.
Wordament is a free game that I first discovered from listening to the Windows Phone Radio Podcast. It’s since been mentioned on Hot Apps (which I typically catch on the Xbox dashboard) and is also frequently mentioned on the Windows Phone Dev Podcast. It truly deserves all the recognition that it gets.
At it’s core, Wordament is a massively-multiplayer version of Boggle. All persons playing the game around the world are shown the same 4×4 grid of letters on their phones and are given 2 minutes to find as many words as possible in that time period. Afterwards, there is a 30 second break between matches where you get to see a personalized evaluation of your performance, as well as an opportunity to see how you compared to all the other people playing the game.
Because an entire game from start to finish only takes up 2 minutes and 30 seconds, it’s really an incredible time waster. This is definitely a good go-to game when you’re waiting for food at a restaurant or just have a couple minutes to kill. It’s also a fun game to pass around to friends to have them play a round or two. It’s also a Windows Phone exclusive, so it’s yet another way (besides achievements) to get your friends jealous about Windows Phone content.
Wordament is a free, ad-supported game. Advertisements are unobtrusive and a small price to pay for what is truly an amazing game. Recent updates have also added some great new visual elements to the UI, as well as some detailed personal stat tracking. Make no mistake; this is an essential download for any Windows Phone owner. Get it now.
